Abundant wildlife and breathtaking scenery
Africa is a wildlife wonderland. From the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) to the thousands of different bird species, there is something for every animal enthusiast.
Observing game in its natural habitat is simply mind-blowing. The sights, sounds and smells make for an unforgettable experience. Every day is unique and spontaneous. You never know which animals will cross your path or how they’ll interact with one another. Relaxing by a waterhole, at play or on a kill, they’re so close, you can almost touch them. Impressive creatures set amongst dramatic landscapes defined by rich grasslands, endless plains, imposing volcanoes and ground water forests with a diversity of plant life not found anywhere else on the planet.
The famous Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya form a designated ecosystem of 25,000km2. Home to 95 species of mammals and over 500 types of bird, it’s the backdrop for the annual migration, when 1.5 million animals travel on a never-ending journey in search of lush pastures and access to precious water. Lurking in the rivers that they dare to cross are some of the largest crocodiles on earth.
Tanzania and Kenya are not alone however in offering exceptional birding and game viewing. Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia and South Africa are all fantastic safari locations. Each country has carved out its own niche and become renowned for certain species of wildlife that flourish in its unique topography.
Explore the epic landscapes by jeep, on foot, on camel, elephant or horse back. For something truly different, travel by light aircraft and behold the haunting beauty of the Skeleton Coast of Namibia. Spy desert elephants amongst the rolling sand dunes and cape fur seals sheltering on the shipwrecked shores. Or watch endangered turtles converge on the beaches of Mozambique to nest and their hatchlings break out of their eggs and stumble to the sea.
The ultimate outdoor playground
An African safari makes the perfect family holiday. It’s a fantastic opportunity for children to learn about plants, trees, wildlife and a completely different culture. With a private jeep, you can explore at your own pace. There are child-friendly lodges who’ll adapt meal times to suit your hungry brood, provide babysitters giving you time to yourself and who’ll organise a whole host of activities so that no-one complains of being bored.
The youngsters can be entertained with warrior face painting, making bows and arrows, baking rhino shaped cookies, making plaster casts of animal tracks and paper out of elephant dung. Whilst their older siblings can try their hand at tracking animals, fire building, fishing, horse riding and mountain biking.
There are so many incredible experiences to share as a family. As if the wildlife spectacle wasn’t enough, you can visit local villages together, go kayaking, swimming and star gazing.
